Why are phenols useful?

Olive oil polyphenols have been found to have numerous beneficial effects. 

  • They decrease heart disease risk factors by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • They have been found to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and risk of coronary disease.
  • They contribute to reducing blood clotting and improving the health of artery linings.
  • They reduce cancer risks and specially hormone-associated cancers (breast, uterine, ovarian, and prostate).

According to the EU-432/2012 norm, olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.

Only extra virgin olive oils which contain at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g of olive oil, can use this claim. 20g corresponds to the suggested daily intake.

This practically corresponds  to  couple of table spoons.
